Updated: Jul 28, 2022

Migraine headaches are characterized by throbbing or pulsing pain in a single location of the head. Migraines are often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last anywhere from hours to days and are often preceded by warning signs known as aura (See definition below in Stage 2). Migraine headaches often start in infancy, adolescence, or early adulthood and develop through four stages, but you may not have all of them.

Migraine Stages and Symptoms

Prodrome is the first stage

You may encounter symptoms such as: one or two days before a migraine:

Constipation

Depression

Hunger pangs

Hyperactivity

Irritability

stiffness in the neck

yawning uncontrollably

Aura (Stage 2)

Aura can appear before or during a migraine attack. Auras are nervous system symptoms that most commonly manifest as visual disturbances, but they can also manifest as sensory, motor, or linguistic disorders.

The following are some examples of aura:

  • Vision loss, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots, or flashes of light Visual phenomena, such as seeing various shapes, bright spots, or flashes of light

  • Feelings of pins and needles in an arm or leg

  • Speech or language difficulties (aphasia)

  • Auras are less usually related with limb weakness (hemiplegic migraine). The majority of people do not get aura during or before a migraine attack.

Migraine Attack (Stage 3)

A migraine can last anywhere from four to 72 hours if left untreated, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person.

You may encounter the following symptoms during a migraine:

  • Pain on one or both sides of your head that feels like it's pulsing and throbbing

  • Light, sound, and sometimes scent sensitivity

  • Vomiting and nausea

  • Vision is hazy

  • Lightheadedness, which may or may not be followed by fainting

Postdrome (Stage 4)

After a migraine episode, the final phase, known as postdrome, occurs. You may feel depleted and washed out during this time, while other people report feeling mildly euphoric.

Migraine Headache Causes

Although the exact etiology of migraine headaches is unknown, a variety of factors appear to have a role, including genetics, environmental factors, changes in the brainstem (the area between the brain and the spinal cord), and serotonin, which helps regulate pain signals in the nervous system. Many people are aware that specific triggers increase migraine attacks in them.

Headache causes for migraines

  • Women's hormonal fluctuations.

  • Foods. Aged cheeses, salty meals, and processed foods are all good choices. Attacks can also be triggered by skipping meals or fasting.

  • Additives to food. Monosodium glutamate with aspartame (MSG).

  • Drinks. Alcohol, particularly wine, and caffeinated beverages are high in caffeine.

  • Stress.

  • Stimuli to the senses. Bright lights, glare from the sun, loud noises, or strange odors are all things to avoid.

  • Changes in the wake-sleep cycle. Sleep deprivation, excessive sleep, or even jet lag.

  • Factors of nature Physical exertion at a high level.

  • Changes in the natural world. Weather or barometric pressure changes.

  • Medications. Vasodilators and oral contraceptives

Migraine headache risk factors

  • History of the family.

  • Age. By the age of 40, the majority of migraine sufferers have had their first attack.

  • Sex. Migraines are three times as common in women.

  • Hormonal shifts

Migraine Headaches and Lifestyle Changes: Chiropractic Treatment

Adjustments to the spine have been demonstrated to have a significant impact on the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. Chiropractic has been found in studies to be as beneficial as certain types of medication in preventing migraines. In addition, one study found that 22% of patients who underwent chiropractic adjustments experienced a 90% reduction in migraine attacks and 49% experienced a significant reduction in migraine intensity. When your chiropractor makes a spinal adjustment to release pressure on the nervous system, the nervous system is able to function as it was intended. When pressure interferes with your nervous system's ability to manage and coordinate all of your body's processes, the result can be discomfort and dysfunction, such as migraines. Changes in your lifestyle, such as altering your diet and exercise habits, can also have a positive impact on your migraine attacks as well as your general health.

We achieve excellent outcomes for migraine headache sufferers at ChiroSolutions Center. Our first step will be to figure out what's causing your pain and then work to fix it. Migraines will persist and may worsen if the source is not identified and corrected. Subluxations (misalignments of the spinal bones) place pressure on the nerves, causing pain and interfering with the nervous system.
