Arm Pain in Virginia Beach

As chiropractors, we see a wide range of ailments present themselves in our offices. Arm pain, pain that radiates into the arm, arm or hand weakness, and numbness and tingling in the arms and hands are all conditions that we successfully treat.

What is the source of arm pain, numbness, and tingling in the arms and hands?

The cervical (neck) area of the spine is the source of the majority of arm pain. The brachial plexus is a collection of five nerves that start in the neck and create the brachial plexus. Arm pain or radiation can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • If one of these locations of the spine misaligns or develops a subluxation, the pressure from that misalignment can produce arm pain.

  • Degeneration of the discs

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Herniation of a disc

  • Also, any combination of the foregoing!

Arm discomfort should be taken seriously because it is frequently a sign of direct pressure on a nerve in the neck. When arm discomfort arises, the underlying source of the problem in the cervical region of the spine has usually been there for several years. Because just 10% of the nerve system senses pain, most people who come in with arm pain are unaware that they have issues developing.

When we take x-rays of the neck in cases like arm pain, we usually observe arthritis, disc space loss, bone spurs, and degeneration, all of which indicate that the condition began many years ago.

If the underlying cause of arm pain is not identified and treated in a timely and effective manner, a person may require steroid injections in the neck, and many people may require surgery.

Arm Pain Case Study

A patient recently presented to our office with neck pain and left arm ache all the way down to the elbow. Due to the agony and weakness, he had difficulties turning his head in any direction and couldn't move his arm. His left elbow's deep tendon reflexes were reduced, as was his upper arm's sensation, indicating direct pressure on a nerve in his neck. A neurosurgeon's MRI revealed a significant disc bulge in his cervical spine, which was placing pressure on the nerve. The young man came to us because the neurosurgeon had offered surgery as his only alternative choice after physical therapy and steroid injections had failed.

This young man in his 30s had no arm pain, no neck pain, and complete range of motion in his neck after three weeks of chiropractic adjustments. He still has a disc bulge, but it isn't causing him any problems. He is relieved that he will not have to endure dangerous surgery and that he may check his blind spot while driving by turning his head. He can also pick up his three-year-old son, which he couldn't do before because of the symptoms.
