When the nerve system is irritated or pressured, pain is sensed. The central nervous system, which comprises of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves that exit out between the spinal bones, detects pain and sends it to your brain throughout your complete body.
Back Pain Can Be Delayed In Some Cases
Many people are unaware that just 10% of their nerve system is capable of sensing pain. The rest of your nervous system is in charge of controlling and coordinating all of your body's operations, including your muscles, internal organs, heart and lungs, reproduction system, and every cell.
Back discomfort from injuries, accidents, falls, or even lifting something incorrectly might take years to manifest because only 10% of the nerve system perceives pain. It's not unusual for us to see a patient for a back injury that happened years ago but is only now producing pain and issues.
You might be able to relate to going to the dentist and discovering that you have a cavity despite the fact that you haven't had any pain. Because the cavity hasn't yet reached a nerve, this is the case. Back discomfort is a similar case. Back pain is your body's way of alerting you to the fact that something is amiss. One of the reasons we recommend Wellness Chiropractic Care is because of this.
Back Pain and Its Causes
Subluxations (or misalignments in the spine) are the most common cause of back pain. This is because even something as simple as sleeping in the wrong position can cause the vertebrae in your spine to become misaligned. Many of us have bad posture, both while sitting and standing, which can lead to subluxations. Sports, golf, tennis, softball, lifting and twisting, bending over — these and other activities regularly produce subluxations (misalignments) of the spine.
Subluxations are also caused by tendons and ligament sprains, muscle strains, osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, and disc herniation. Subluxations induced by disc degeneration can take years to manifest in many persons.
Misalignment (Subluxations):
When the spine's joints are misaligned, or out of alignment, and do not move appropriately. Subluxations have a negative impact on the nervous system because misalignments in the spine irritate the nerves within the joints of the spine, resulting in discomfort.
Degeneration of the Discs:
When a disc in the spine degenerates, the space between the joints shrinks, irritating sensitive nerve fibers and resulting in discomfort. The area available for the nerves to exit the spine shrinks as the disc shrinks. The nerves will eventually rub against the spine's bones, creating pain. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that generates inflammation, and as the inflammation affects the nerves, back pain develops.
Injuries to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments:
Muscle strains, as well as tendons and ligament sprains, can result in a sharp discomfort in your back. The joints in your spine are frequently forced out of normal alignment following injuries to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in your back. If left untreated, subluxations (misalignments) can result in a decrease of range of motion and, eventually, osteoarthritis.
Back Pain Is a Sign That Something Is Wrong: Back pain is a sign that something is wrong
You should not overlook back discomfort if you are suffering it. Something is irritating your nerves, and if the inflammation is exerting pressure on or pinching your nerves, your body will not work properly. Because the nervous system is in charge of everything in your body, when it malfunctions, it can cause a slew of additional issues.
Identifying and Treating the Cause of Your Back Pain
When a person suffers from back pain, our goal at Tuckahoe Family Chiropractic is to identify and treat the true underlying cause of the problem. If you don't treat your back problems, they'll only grow worse. Back pain should not be disregarded since, over time, the misalignment and dysfunction of the spinal joints can lead to degenerative disc degeneration and, eventually, osteoarthritis, which will create long-term pain and issues.
Our goal as chiropractors is to locate and fix the source of your back problems, thereby alleviating pain and restoring normal function. To accomplish so, we begin with a consultation, followed by tests and x-rays (if necessary) to discover the underlying cause of your condition and the best course of action to correct it. This will enable us to treat the root of your back pain, restore normal function and movement to your spine, and eliminate the source of your back pain.
Many people have been conditioned to take pain relievers rather than seek effective chiropractic care to correct the true source of their back pain. Please note that, while pain relievers provide temporary comfort, they do not solve the problem; rather, they conceal or obscure the genuine underlying cause of your pain.
What Happens If I Don't Treat My Back Pain?
Back discomfort caused by subluxations, pinched nerves, herniated discs, and other nerve irritants does not improve on its own if left untreated. With the pain coming and going, these issues tend to get worse with time. When the discomfort stops for a while, people may believe the problem has just vanished. We've seen people in our practice who have experienced back pain on and off for 5, 10, even 20 years. Degenerative alterations to the discs in the vertebrae, as well as osteoarthritis, can occur over time. They may have even reached a point where the degenerative symptoms are irreversible and cannot be reversed. At this point, appropriate chiropractic care may be able to prevent future joint degeneration and provide pain relief, but the spine will have suffered a great deal of damage. As you can see, ignoring back discomfort and leaving it untreated for an extended period of time might result in long-term consequences.
